Die Kunsthistorikerin Anne Hollander erläutert, dass Mode es dem Menschen ermöglicht seine Welt zu kontrollieren, indem er Bilder von sich kontrolliert. Mode ist demnach Inszenierung von Bildlichkeiten.Die Modedesignerin Vivienne Westwood bedient sich dieses Wissens. Sie nimmt Anleihen an der Kostüm-, Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte, sie spielt mit plakativen Motiven und Klischees, sie provoziert durch Freizügigkeit einerseits, und durch britische Tradition und Opulenz andererseits. Vivienne Westwood erschafft mit ihrer Mode eine Vielzahl an Bildern, ja ganze Bildwelten. Die vorliegende Arbeit soll diesen Aspekt untersuchen und von verschiedenen Seiten beleuchten.Der Fokus dieser Seminararbeit liegt auf zwei großen Themengebieten. Beide Themengebiete beziehen sich aufeinander und spielen auch in Westwoods Mode zusammen.Zum einen ist das der Bezug zur Vergangenheit und Geschichte, der bei Westwoods Mode eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Es wird erläutert auf welche Weisen sich die Designerin Inspirationen aus der Kostüm- und Kunstgeschichte holt und wie sie diese in ihrer Mode verarbeitet. Es wird außerdem auf den Diskussionspunkt des Kopierens eingegangen. Der Grad zwischen Kopie und Hommage, zwischen Inspiration und Abklatsch ist dünn und schwer einzugrenzen. Als zweites großes Kapitel wird das Frauenbild in Westwoods Mode thematisiert. Es geht um Sexualität und Erotik, um die Macht des Weiblichen und um das Spielen mit Klischees.
